Title: Glooscap Legends
Author: Stanley T. Spicer
“These stirring tales describe the life-history of Glooscap. Endowed with supreme powers, Glooscap, the benevolent warrior against evil, was credited with the creation of many wild creatures and the change in form of others. Even the land was influences by his handiwork and several notable landmarks along the Fundy coast are linked to his story.”

Title: Micmac Medicines Remedies and Recollections
Author: Laurie Lacey
“In this delightful book, Laurie Lacey’s reflection on the magical world of plant life and the gathering of remedies chronicles more than 70 plants used by the Micmac as medicines. Since the Micmac healing process begins with the gathering and preperation of medicines, Lacey takes us into swamps and bogs, the barrens and woods to explore the habitats of plants with healing properties. He then illustrates each medicinal plant and describes its traditional uses. Whether one is hiking through a field listening for the sound of the “scared plant,” the yellow rattle, exploring bogs in the hope of finding the elusive blue flag, or simply interested in the Micmac approach to health and healing. Micmac Medicines will prove a helpful and enjoyable companion.”

Title: Red Earth Tales Of The Mi’kmaq
Author: Marion Robertson
“Legends have always been an important part of Mi’kmaq culture; the tradition is brimming with tales that have been told for generations. In Red Earth, twenty-six of those legends – about Niscaminou, the Stars and the Moon, Glooscap, and more – are recounted in the vivid language of storytellers. We learn about the sisters who married Stars, about the very first cedar tree, and how the loon became a sea bird. And interspersed throughout the book are George Creed’s tracings of Mi’kmaq petroglyphs, which beautifully illustrate the legends.”

Title: Let Us Remember The Old Mi’kmaq
Author: The Confederacy Of Mainland Mi’kmaq / Robert S. Peabody Museum Of Archaeology
“In 1930 and 1931, anthropologist Frederick Johnson, then 27 years old, visited seven Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. During these visits he took about 200 photographs that are the core of this book. Over the past 4 years, The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq and the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology have worked together to reproduce Johnson’s original images and to create a photographic history of 20th century Mi’kmaw experience.”

Title: Mi’kmaq Hieroglyphic Prayers
Author: Schmidt / Marshall
“Mi’kmaq Hieroglyphic Prayers is a collection of sacred readings (prayers, narratives, and liturgies) represented by hieroglyphs developed from pictographic symbols used by the Mi’kmaq Indians of Atlantic Canada before European contact, and later expanded by French missionaries. This volume contains some of the most important texts in native religious life, such as ‘The Passion of our Lord’ and ‘The Sacraments,’ as well as common prayers for everyday recitation. Transliterations in Mi’kmaq and translation in English accompany the hieroglyphic text.”

Title: We Were Not The Savages
Author: Daniel N. Paul
“We Were Not the Savages … is unique, in chronological scope and in the story it tells, covering the last three centuries of Mi’kmaq history in detail. Prior to the appearance of this book it was common for historians to downplay or even deny the violence inflicted on the Mi’kmaq people by European and Euro-American colonizers. This work, more than any other piece of scholarly production, has headed off that consensus at a pass. Scalp-bounty policies are now recognized as a historical problem worthy of investigation.”
